DETROIT WATER AND SEWERAGE DEPARTMENT

ROMEO ARM OF THE MACOMB SEWER INTERCEPTOR

October 15, 2004 Update

DWSD has implemented odor control measures at eight manholes and the discharge shaft at the construction site. The odor control measure used at the manholes consists of an industrial multi-purpose liquid odor counteractant. This counteractant is sprayed on a filter cloth that is wrapped over the manhole. The treated cloth filters the odor dissipated from the sewer before it is discharged into the air. Additionally, an activated carbon scrubber system has been installed near one manhole and the discharge shaft. A suction fan takes the air from inside the manhole and discharge shaft into the activated carbon scrubber, where it is filtered and then released into the environment.

The Department is continuing the process of installing the bulkhead in the interceptor. Both bulkheads, east and west of the repair area, must be in place before wastewater flow through the portion of the interceptor to be repaired can be stopped.

Since the sinkhole first appeared on August 22nd, activity at the construction site has been concentrated on stabilizing the area and making preparations to ensure no interruption to wastewater service. Activities include installation of the bypasses (for continued wastewater flow), jet grouting (to stabilize the ground), bulkhead installation (to isolate the repair area in the interceptor itself) and metal sheeting placed in the sinkhole on the north and south sides of the interceptor (this will complete the stabilization of the ground in the sinkhole itself), before repair crews can begin digging down to expose the interceptor.
