DETROIT WATER AND SEWERAGE DEPARTMENT

ROMEO ARM OF THE MACOMB SEWER INTERCEPTOR

September 22, 2004 Update

Divers have completed cleaning operations, removing the steel and wood lagging boards, in suction shafts 1 and 2. Holes have been cut into the top of the interceptor’s concrete wall, creating an opening at the bottom of each shaft. Each suction shaft will have 2 bypass pumps. The pumps are being installed approximately 10 and 20–feet above the interceptor.

Divers have also completed the cleaning operations in the discharge shaft and cut through the top of the interceptor.

Crews are installing trench boxes where the two 36-inch bypasses will be located below ground level. The trench boxes shore the sides of the trench for workers’ safety. The bypass pipes will be attached to the pumps through wall of the suctions shafts.

Twelve dewatering wells are now in service to remove ground water from around the site.
