DETROIT WATER AND SEWERAGE DEPARTMENT

ROMEO ARM OF THE MACOMB SEWER INTERCEPTOR

September 7, 2004 Update

A cement like mixture of grouting has been inserted at 31 locations around the interceptor to stabilize the ground.

Crews have jet grouted 7 of 10 columns on the west side of the damaged portion of the interceptor. Once those are done, 10 columns will be jet grouted on the east side. These columns will further stabilize the site and form a wall on either side to insolate the repair area.

A wall formed from caissons and steel sheeting, 176 feet long and 50 feet deep, on the south side of 15 Mile Road is completed.

Six dewatering wells are in service to remove ground water from around the site. The ground water level at the site is 35-feet. The current depth of the sinkhole is approximately 30-35 feet deep. The bottom of the sewer interceptor is approximately 70-feet down.

DWSD installed four 12-inch temporary bypass lines to reduce flow in the interceptor. Two of the 12-inch lines have been disconnected.

DWSD is installing two 36-inch diameter pipes as a temporary sewer bypass while repairs are being done. The two lines will replace the 6-foot bypass that was originally planned at the site, and will take less time to construct. One bypass line, 2,700 feet long has been completed.

Sterling Heights is rerouting sewerage flows from the subdivisions on the north and south side of 15 Mile Road downstream of the area of the interceptor failure.
