DETROIT WATER AND SEWERAGE DEPARTMENT

ROMEO ARM OF THE MACOMB SEWER INTERCEPTOR

March 4, 2005 Update

Installation of all 23-replacement pipe sections in the trench has been completed. Since the new pipe has been installed and the trench back-filled to a depth of 18-feet below road level, the dewatering wells are being decommissioned. Nine of the fourteen wells are no longer in use.

Crews are in the process of removing the bulkheads in the interceptor. The bulkhead east of the repair is approximately 50% removed.

When the ground above the interceptor originally collapsed, there were two pipes located above the interceptor, a 12-inch sanitary sewer pipe and an 8-inch water main. The repair site has been back-filled to a depth that permits putting the sanitary sewer pipe back in service. Crews are in the process of installing the sewer pipe.

The department has been monitoring homes south of the repair area once a week and has not detected any movement associated with the sinkhole repair.
