DETROIT WATER AND SEWERAGE DEPARTMENT
ROMEO ARM OF THE MACOMB SEWER INTERCEPTOR
Janauary 7, 2005 Update
Crews have installed 218 caissons in the sinkhole around the repair area. A total of 228 caissons will be installed by mid-January. The caissons are being installed to a depth of 65 feet. DWSD is making every effort to minimize the noise impact on the surrounding area while installing the caissons.
Crews are continuing the excavation of the interceptor. So far, 140 feet of the interceptor has been exposed. Crews have placed 50 feet of concrete mudmat in preparation for replacing the first sections of the interceptor.
To replace the damaged portion of the interceptor, crews must remove the top portion of the collapsed interceptor and place a concrete mudmat on top of what’s left of the collapsed section. Once the mudmat is in place, holes will be drilled down into the remaining interceptor. Grouting will be inserted to totally fill every cavity left in the damaged section, forming a solid support base. Next, a steel and concrete cradle will be installed on top of the mudmat to support the new pipe being installed.
