Drawing Water

Horse-driven pumps

Laying the first wooden water mains

Between each of the four scenes surrounding Neptune to the north, south, east and west are additional scenes portraying the development of Detroit's first waterworks: an early water tower, residents drawing water, one of two horse-driven pumps owned by Rufus Wells - a private water supplier - at the foot of Randolph Street (1827) and workmen laying the first wooden water mains (1827).
